Annual Meeting | Letter from CPA President Scott Hibbard | Related Documents

August 3, 2017

Dear Friends,

Greetings all.  I hope you and your families are enjoying this beautiful summer.  Even with so little beach, the lakeshore remains a beautiful haven and Castle Park a welcome retreat.

I am writing today to remind everyone that this year's annual meeting will be held on Saturday, August 12th, at 4:30 pm in the Castle.   Among other topics, we will be voting on a new slate of Board Members and updating the membership on projects underway in the Park.  This will include reports from the various Committees as well as an update on the proposed development outside the Park.  An agenda for the Annual Meeting can be found here HERE, copy of the minutes from the 2016 Annual Meeting here HERE, and the announcement from the Nominating Committee for the next group of Board Members HERE.  Martha Moyer, Bob Allison and Jay Mittelstead have been nominated to serve on the Board for the next three years.  This will also be my last meeting as Board President, as the very capable Martha Laughna takes over as President of the Board of Trustees.

I, and the Board, would encourage you all to attend the Annual Meeting, or to ensure that a representative of your cottage is present at the meeting (or otherwise represented by proxy).  You can find a proxy form here HERE.  If there is anything you would like to have considered, please get in touch with me, Bonnie or another Board member.

Please note that all proxies must be in written form, and that we can only accept one proxy per cottage.  Please return your signed proxy via regular mail to 6690 Edwards, Holland, MI 49423. Alternately, you can send the proxy as a signed PDF file via e-mail to Bonnie Lawson or the Board Secretary, Peter Keehn, at Peter Keehn, or to me at shibbar1@depaul.edu. If you would prefer to designate who holds your proxy or include voting instructions, please print that information on your form.  If you have a problem linking to these documents, please contact Bonnie or me.

There are a few other issues of note that I would like to bring to your attention.  First, the Laketown Township Planning Commission met last night and expressed their unanimous opposition to the proposed Eldean development outside of the Park (discussed in my letter of June 21).  While the Commission did not take a final vote on the matter, they did pass a motion to begin the process of denying the Eldean's request for a "special use permit," and plan a final vote to reject the measure at the next Commission meeting in September. This is all good news from the Association perspective.  The Planning Commission will also consider the merits of rezoning the property, changing it from commercial to residential.  Again, I will say more about this at the Annual meeting.

Second, the new Castle Park website should be fully functional in the next week or so.  Please look for a notice discussing this in greater detail shortly.

We also are very thankful that the size of the beach has improved in recent days.  The Association continues to encourage people to use South Beach, which is in quite good shape.  If, however, you are going to visit the Palmer/Muzzy beach, please use the North Beach steps, which are now more accessible in calm water.  We would also ask you not use the Palmer/Muzzy stairs unless you are elderly, impaired, carrying a baby, or if the waves make the North steps too difficult.  We want to minimize use of the path in front of the Laughna/Redding cottage because of erosion concerns and out of respect for their privacy.  Finally, I would remind everyone that dogs are not allowed on the beach, especially during prime beach hours. Please share this update with your children and renters.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to give a special note of thanks to Mark, Bonnie, Cassandra, Luke, Conner, Dierdre, Christine, Aaron and the rest of our staff for their efforts this Summer.   There is a great deal of work that happens behind the scenes to make all the events and activities come off without a hitch.

Be well and I look forward to seeing everyone on August 12, if not before.

All the best,
Scott Hibbard, President
Castle Park Association Board of Trustees
